Groundbreaking held for “new” Tribal Foods Distribution building
The Tribal Foods Distribution Program of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) will move into its new home next summer. A groundbreaking was held on the warm afternoon of Thursday, May 19 for a project that will see a part of an existing building renovated and part of it torn down and rebuilt as a two-story, nearly 8,000 square feet addition for the Program.
Henry Owl Building dedicated at UNC-Chapel Hill
After a formal dedication ceremony on Friday, May 13, the Henry Owl Building is officially named and now houses UNC (University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill) Student Affairs.
Cherokee Indian Fair to be held at old elementary school site
After a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cherokee Indian Fair will be back in action this year, but it will be in a different location.

I drive by the Oconaluftee River, on the Qualla Boundary, multiple times daily and I frequently take walks on the Oconaluftee River Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It seems that as tourism increases in late spring and summer, a practice increases – one that damages river ecosystems for many species…moving and stacking rocks.

The Cherokee Lady Braves (19-4) spread the ball around well as they advanced to the finals of the Big Smoky Mountain Conference with a 77-46 win over Rosman (14-10) on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Charles George Memorial Arena.
BASKETBALL: Mintz nets 34 points, leads Braves to SMC finals
To borrow a phrase from sportscaster Dan Patrick, Cherokee’s Tye Mintz, sophomore forward, was “en fuego” on Tuesday night.
WRESTLING: Cherokee wrestler tops in Region
Cherokee’s Anthony Toineeta (30-4) punched his ticket to the big show after finishing atop the podium in the 1A Western Regionals Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Cherryville High School.
