Lengthy work session held on constitution referendum issues
Tribal Council held a work session, lasting nearly three hours, on legislation seeking new referendum questions regarding the proposed constitution for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The session was held on the morning of Wednesday, June 21 on Res. No. 627 (2023).
CIPD makes drug bust during probation check
Officers with the Cherokee Indian Police Department conducted a probation check off of Long Branch Road on Friday, June 16.
CCS School Board reviews coaching contracts
Much of the School Board’s open discussion at the meeting on Monday, June 19 revolved around contract renewals for coaches at Cherokee Central Schools (CCS). There were several other personnel items passed as well, but none of those prompted open discussion.

Dunn named to MANNA Board
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) will be represented on the board of directors of a major regional food distribution organization. Frank Dunn, an EBCI tribal member and the manager of the EBCI Tribal Food Distribution Program, has been named to the MANNA FoodBank’s Board.

Ki Ree French, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from the Big Cove Community, has followed in the proud tradition of Native Americans serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

COMMENTARY: Coming to terms with terms
We are scheduled to decide, through referendum, whether we want to have our elected officials subject to term limits in the upcoming tribal elections (September 2023). While that seems like a long time away, it really isn’t. In fact, the election year begins only a few months from now.

Presently, there are 259 Native-centered service providers that are culturally appropriate for Native Americans and Alaska Natives; and that includes only 62 shelters nationwide.

BASKETBALL: Straughan, Teesateskie hit 1,000 pt. milestone on same night
Two Cherokee varsity basketball players hit career milestones on the same evening. Holden Straughan, Braves senior, and Tori Teesateskie, Lady Braves junior, both scored the 1,000th point of their career during games against Andrews at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 6.
BASKETBALL: Braves beat Murphy, remain unbeaten in Conference
The Cherokee Braves (15-3), who have already clinched the Big Smoky Mountain Conference regular season title, are still unbeaten in conference play as they beat Murphy 85-65 in a game at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the evening of Monday, Feb. 5.

OBITUARY: Charles K. “Bear” Johnson
Charles K. “Bear” Johnson, 84, of the Yellowhill Community, stepped into his eternal heavenly home on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022. Bear is survived by Verna Arthur Johnson, the love of his life whom he met at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan. They were married on Oct. 3, 2003.
