One Feather staffer receives $5,000 grant from International Women’s Media Foundation
Brooklyn Brown, a reporter for the Cherokee One Feather, recently applied for and received an individual grant of $5,000 from the International Women’s Media Foundation Fund for Indigenous Journalists: Reporting on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and Transgender People (MMIWG2T).

Cherokee funeral home owner indicted on child sex offenses
Bruce Martin Jr., 51, owner of Long House Funeral Home in Cherokee, N.C., was indicted by a grand jury in Jackson County on Nov. 13, 2023, on six child sex offenses, including one count of statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult, four counts of indecent liberties with a child, and one count of statutory sexual offense with a person who is 15 or younger.

Three Cherokee Nation citizens have been named this year’s Cherokee National Treasures for their work in preserving and promoting Cherokee art and culture. The Cherokee Nation Treasure status is an honor presented by the tribe to individuals who are keeping the art, language and culture alive through their crafts and work.

COMMENTARY: It isn’t all about the “per cap.”
This is another year of decision. We are in what the election board, and Code, call “election year.” It was designated, in part, to prevent our governors from creating preferential law, or to be perceived as creating preferential law to garner votes and stay in office. Equally, it was to protect the incumbent leadership from manipulation by special interests within the tribe.

FOOTBALL: Maroon Devils top Braves, Cherokee at .500 for season
What started out as a close defensive-driven game, ended up with 71 points being scored and the teams combining for over 780 yards of total offense.
