Cherokee celebrates Earth Week
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) celebrated Earth Week (April 17-22) with several events on and around the Qualla Boundary encouraging knowledge of environmental and wildlife issues.

“We’re not going to lose it. We’re not,” Bo Lossiah, New Kituwah Academy curriculum and instruction supervisor, told a crowd gathered following the Annual Cherokee Speakers Walk of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).
“An experience for the ages”: 407 Project holds latest groundbreaking
The next piece is in place for the 407: Gateway to Adventure project in Sevier County, Tennessee. Smoky Gap is the name of the newest attraction to the property owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. It is set to be completed by 2025, and an official groundbreaking was held on site on the morning of Tuesday, April 11.

Honoring Nikwasi event commemorates deed transfer of sacred mound
Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) joined Nikwasi Initiative and Town of Franklin officials for an event, called Honoring Nikwasi, at the Big Bear Shelter across the street from the mound on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 24 to commemorate the historic transfer.

Cherokee information signs added at Lake Chatuge

WRESTLING: Braves fall to Towns Co., White Co., in tri-team duals
The Cherokee Braves fell to the Towns County (Ga.) Indians by a score of 66-18 and the White County (Ga.) Warriors 52-18 in the tri-team duals on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Towns County High School.
BASKETBALL: Three Braves in double digits in win over Swain
On paper, the game should have been closer. Cherokee had three players in double digits. Swain had three players in double digits.
BASKETBALL: Lossiah leads Lady Braves over Swain
LeLe Lossiah led Cherokee (11-3) over Swain on Tuesday, Jan. 12 as the Lady Braves remained unbeaten in the Big Smoky Mountain Conference.

Agnes Wolfe, 68, of Cherokee, passed away on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021. She was born in Cherokee to the late Charles and Cecelia Johnson.

Mary Jane Walkingstick Taylor, age 76, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 at Cherokee Indian Hospital. She is the daughter of the late Mason Walkingstick and Lucy Walkingstick.

Herman Wachacha Sr., age 67, of the Snowbird Community, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021 at Mission Hospital in Asheville after an extended illness.
