Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers responded to a trike motorcycle accident on Newfound Gap Road approximately 9 miles south of Sugarlands Visitor Center on Friday, Sept. 9, at approximately 11:04 a.m.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park welcomed Medal of Honor Recipients and their families to Cades Cove on Thursday, Sept. 8. Park staff and volunteers provided a guided tour for the delegation of approximately 60 participants to enjoy the scenic beauty of Cades Cove along with special programs.

EBCI pageants cancelled; royalty to serve another year

Cherokee Preservation Foundation announces Spring Grants for 2020
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation awarded 16 spring grants to partners within Western North Carolina and beyond. Grants totaled more than $2 million and were awarded to projects advancing the Foundation’s mission of improving the quality of life for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and neighboring communities.

COMMENTARY: What are we going to do?
As we conclude Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to talk about a subject that most folks are either repulsed by or don’t want to think about at all – the abusers, the perpetrators of domestic violence. After all, over this past month, we have talked about the heartache and physical pain these people inflict on others. Some of the stories of domestic violence are painful and horrifying.
COMMENTARY: Kids pay the price
We have been talking about domestic violence because this is the month set aside to place focus on the issue. We have discussed elder and spousal abuse. But those are not the only sufferers from this societal challenge.

The Cherokee Lady Braves (19-7) finished their 2017-18 season with a 55-32 loss at Murphy in the 1A West regional semifinals on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 27.
WRESTLING: Paul wins state title
William Paul, an EBCI tribal member and senior at Swain High School, won the 1A state wrestling championship in the 220lb. division at the state meet held at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 17.
