EBCI GOVT. EXPLAINED: How legislation becomes law
Section 117 Article II of the Cherokee Code of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) deals with the powers and authority of Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) as the Tribe’s Legislative Branch of government.
Coming full circle: Sign designating Kuwohi installed in Park
The name of the third-highest summit east of the Mississippi River was restored to its original name last fall, and now it is completely official – it has a sign. A sign designating the area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park known as Kuwohi (mulberry place) was officially unveiled in a ceremony on the morning of Tuesday, April 1.

Reis Howell, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is aiming high for his future. The Tumwater High School (Wash.) senior has received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The community should craft the governing document for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Certainly, the community will want legal guidance for the process. That is just a reality of our times. We have become a society of vague language, with multiple meanings and motives attached to the words we write.

Jayce Daniels, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a senior at Piedmont High School in Piedmont, Okla., has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Northern Oklahoma College.

OBITUARY: Matthew Lee Smith “Bubba”
Matthew Lee Smith “Bubba”, 41, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, passed away peacefully to go home and be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 13, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Walter “Paul” Smith and Kathy “Punkin” Smith.

Georgenna Lee Arch, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital.
