For Tara Saunooke Alexander and her daughter, Katie Alexander, both members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, sports are a family affair. Tara, a standout basketball player at AC Reynolds and Clemson University, was recently inducted into the WNC Athletic Hall of Fame. Katie just finished four stellar years playing volleyball at Asheville Christian and received a national award.
ON THE SIDELINES: Cooperation is needed to solve charter school situation
For years, schools in the 1A division of NCHSAA (N.C. High School Athletic Association) have had to play against non-traditional schools (charter schools, prep, etc.) who are able to garner players from all over, not just their geographic area like other schools.

OBITUARY: Edwina Dean Lambert
Edwina Dean Lambert, 55, of Cherokee, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, July 20, 2024, after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1968, to the late Chief Henry Ray Lambert and Patricia Eldean Sneed Lambert.
OBITUARY: Deweese Wolfe
Deweese Wolfe, 81, of the Big Cove Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 12, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Amble and Eva Queen Wolfe and husband of the late Elsie Taylor Wolfe.

Keri Lynn Brady, age 57, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at her residence in Tennessee. She is the daughter of Blanche Vickers and the late Robert Brady Sr.

River Kane, an emerging rock band based out of Cherokee, is hosting their inaugural Christmas Toy Drive benefiting Cherokee Youth at their upcoming concert on Friday, Dec. 21 at the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds.
