Tribe’s medical cannabis business gearing up
Medical cannabis is in the works for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and will be dispensed in 2023. Qualla is the corporation set up to run the business for the Tribe, and the dispensary will be located at a building known to many on the Qualla Boundary – the old Tribal Bingo Building.
Capitol Christmas Tree comes to Cherokee; EBCI, U.S. Forest Service sign stewardship agreements
This year’s Capitol Christmas came to Cherokee, N.C. on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 6, and the event saw the signing of two landmarks agreements between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and the U.S. Forest Service.
Park fire near Chilhowee Lake 90 percent contained
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials reported that the wildfire near Chilhowee Lake is currently 90 percent contained. Incident Commander Erik Newell coordinated wildland firefighter response to the wildfire which is estimated to be approximately 40 acres in size and is located on the western boundary of the park along Highway 129 near mile marker 4.5.

Siweumptewa represented two tribes during her reign
Destiny Siweumptewa was crowned the 2018-19 Junior Miss Cherokee during last year’s Cherokee Indian Fair. This past year has been an exciting ride filled with new experiences and learning opportunities while representing not only the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians but also another part of her heritage – the Hopi Tribe of Arizona.
