Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Ordinance for 72-hour hold approved by Tribal Council
On Jan. 4, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Tribal Council approved an ordinance submitted by the Cherokee Police Commission on Nov. 27, 2023, amending the Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Criminal Code to create a rebuttable presumption that a defendant charged with certain violent criminal offenses will serve 72 hours in detention prior to release conditions.

The AWAKE Children’s Advocacy Center out of Sylva, NC, hosted the 2024 Champions for Children conference at the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort Convention Center from Jan. 8 to Jan. 12.
Leading the way: Cherokee to receive 15 more electric school buses
In March 2022, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) received the first electric school bus in the State of North Carolina. Now the Cherokee Boys Club (CBC), the EBCI tribal entity that operates the school buses for the Cherokee Central Schools system (CCS), will receive 15 more thanks to federal funding that has been announced.

COMMENTARY: What should we do with the elk?
During EBCI Community Services program reports last week, Natural Resource Enforcement (NRE) reported that out of 908 total calls for the previous reporting period (typically a month), 123 calls were requesting help with elk. That is roughly 13.5 percent of all call activity for that period being elk related.
COMMENTARY: Curing what ails us
Our heritage, benefits, and personal identity have long been wrapped up in a system that identifies us as enrolled members of a body of people. In an ironic twist of fate, we are identified as Cherokee due to our connection to a federal roll established in 1924.
