EBCI pageants cancelled; royalty to serve another year
Due to concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) will not have royalty pageants this fall.
Cherokee Preservation Foundation announces Spring Grants for 2020
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation awarded 16 spring grants to partners within Western North Carolina and beyond. Grants totaled more than $2 million and were awarded to projects advancing the Foundation’s mission of improving the quality of life for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and neighboring communities.

COMMENTARY: Language is not a requirement for federal recognition
I’ve read comments several times over this past week alone where people state that federally recognized tribes must maintain their language or risk losing their federal recognition. This is absolutely, unequivocally untrue.

Earlier this month, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) announced they would be adding two new names to buildings on campus. They chose two trailblazers at the school. Hortense McClinton was the first Black professor at UNC. Henry Owl, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), was the first American Indian student to attend the university.

BASKETBALL: Cherokee sweeps Union Academy in first round
The Cherokee Braves (19-8) and Lady Braves (24-2) both won their first round match-ups in the 1A state playoffs against the same school, Union Academy.
WRESTLING: Toineeta wins second ring
Anthony Toineeta (52-2) is the first two-time state champion in Cherokee High School history.
BASKETBALL: Braves win conference tournament, Lady Braves second in girls
The Cherokee Braves (18-8) won their second Big Smoky Mountain Conference tournament title in a row on Friday, Feb. 17.
