EBCI applauds U.S. Truth & Healing Commission Bill

This groundbreaking legislation marks a significant step towards acknowledging historical injustices and fostering reconciliation among Native American tribes and the broader American society.

Official proposal submitted for Kuwohi name change
Lavita Hill and Mary Crowe, both members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), submitted a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) on Tuesday, Feb. 6 on behalf of EBCI Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Tribal Council to officially request the name change of Clingman’s Dome, located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and restore it to the original name Kuwohi.

Tribal member admitted to N.C. State Bar
Mara Nelson, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been admitted to the North Carolina State Bar Association. After passing the bar exam recently, Nelson took the oath of office to enter the bar from District 30B Superior Court Judge Bradley Letts, also an EBCI tribal member, on the morning of Tuesday, June 15.

COMMENTARY: It isn’t all about the “per cap.”
This is another year of decision. We are in what the election board, and Code, call “election year.” It was designated, in part, to prevent our governors from creating preferential law, or to be perceived as creating preferential law to garner votes and stay in office. Equally, it was to protect the incumbent leadership from manipulation by special interests within the tribe.
COMMENTARY: How should we treat Kituwah?
Cherokee people have the immense privilege of having access to our Mother Town. Kituwah, and what remains of the mound, was signed into trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Department of the Interior in December of 2021.

BASKETBALL: Teesateskie, Tisho named first team All-District
Tori Teesateskie, a junior at Cherokee High School, and Shay Tisho, a senior at Smoky Mountain, both EBCI tribal members, have been named to the All-District 12 first team (western North Carolina) by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.
BASKETBALL: Three Cherokee players, other tribal members on All-Star roster
Three players from Cherokee High School and three other EBCI tribal members at other schools will participate in the annual Blue-White All-Star Game on Saturday, March 17 at 6pm at Enka High School.
