Official proposal submitted for Kuwohi name change

Lavita Hill and Mary Crowe, both members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), submitted a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) on Tuesday, Feb. 6 on behalf of EBCI Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Tribal Council to officially request the name change of Clingman’s Dome, located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and restore it to the original name Kuwohi.

Tribal member admitted to N.C. State Bar

Mara Nelson, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been admitted to the North Carolina State Bar Association.  After passing the bar exam recently, Nelson took the oath of office to enter the bar from District 30B Superior Court Judge Bradley Letts, also an EBCI tribal member, on the morning of Tuesday, June 15.

This is another year of decision. We are in what the election board, and Code, call “election year.” It was designated, in part, to prevent our governors from creating preferential law, or to be perceived as creating preferential law to garner votes and stay in office. Equally, it was to protect the incumbent leadership from manipulation by special interests within the tribe.
