Ruby Sky Montelongo, a 16-year-old member of the EBCI, was found beaten to death in April 2023. Her uncle, Gerald “Lij” Britton, discovered her body in a field in Mendocino County, Calif.
Allen appointed as new Jackson County Board of Elections director of elections
The Jackson County Board of Elections has announced the appointment of Amanda Allen as the new director of elections effective Monday, Feb. 26. The decision to appoint Allen was a unanimous decision of the Board.

CMS Principal completes Leadership Program
Joel Creasman, principal of Cherokee Middle School, recently completed the Distinguished Leadership in Practice Program (DLP), a year-long leadership development program for practicing school principals designed and provided by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principal’s Association (NCPAPA) and sponsored by the North Carolina Alliance for School Leadership Development (NCASLD.)
Cherokee Summer Carnival returning
After a long year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Cherokee Summer Carnival returns to the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds on July 6-17. Promoters have announced that C & M Southern Midways from Eastabogo, Ala. will field almost 30 amusement rides, games, and food units that will feature some of the newest rides in the amusement industry.
Tribal member admitted to N.C. State Bar
Mara Nelson, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been admitted to the North Carolina State Bar Association. After passing the bar exam recently, Nelson took the oath of office to enter the bar from District 30B Superior Court Judge Bradley Letts, also an EBCI tribal member, on the morning of Tuesday, June 15.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians was well-represented at a recent running event on the coast. The Emerald Isle race was held on Saturday, March 10 and included a marathon, half-marathon, and 5K races.

Rosalie Lewis passed away at Novant Presbyterian Hospital on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, due to complications from flu-related pneumonia. Her 17-day battle with the illness was a true testament to her mental and physical strength.

A $6 million donation by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians will allow San Bernardino-based KVCR Television to launch the nation’s first 24-hour Native American television channel, tribal leaders and the station announced on Wednesday, June 16.
