Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) approves Executive Committee’s Strategic Plan for EBCI
Leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are looking four years out in addressing five of the Tribe’s most pressing needs. Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) approved the 2024-28 Strategic Plan by passing Res. No. 149 (2024), submitted by the EBCI Executive Committee, during a Special-Called Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) session on the morning of Thursday, March 28.
Sam Owl settles in as chief executive officer of Kituwah, LLC
Sam Owl, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), from Wayohi (Wolftown), is the new chief executive officer of Kituwah, LLC. Owl was on the Kituwah Economic Development Board (KEDB) since its inception. Owl succeeds Mark Hubble, who served as chief executive officer since the entity was formed in 2018.

For years, schools in the 1A division of NCHSAA (N.C. High School Athletic Association) have had to play against non-traditional schools (charter schools, prep, etc.) who are able to garner players from all over, not just their geographic area like other schools.

FOOTBALL: Braves win third straight Battle of the Nations
For the third straight year, Cherokee (1-1) defeated Choctaw Central (0-2) and got to hoist the Battle of the Nations trophy in victory.
FOOTBALL: Blackhawks edge Braves in season opener
Cherokee and North Buncombe ended the game very even in the stat books and very close on the scoreboard, but the Blackhawks managed to edge it out on the latter.
Cherokee represented at Speed Week
Men have been testing their mettle and their metal in the form of iron horse racing since 1912 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Speed Week is held Aug. 11-17 at the Flats and Cherokee is being represented by one of the members of the Cherokee Blue Ridge Run event team.

Programs partner to Help Cherokee Artists Market Work
Partners HandMade in America, Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources (RTCAR), Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Arts (OICA) are collaborating to offer the new certificate program entitled Certification in the Building Industry for Cherokee Craft Artists.
Native Internships with Stipend at Indian Arts Research Center
The School for Advanced Research, Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) offers two nine-month internships to Native individuals who are recent college graduates, current graduate students, or junior museum professionals interested in furthering their professional museum experience and enhancing their intellectual capacity for contributing to the expanding field and discourse of museum studies.
Arneach, Duncan to perform with The Liars Bench
The Liars Bench, western North Carolina’s own Southern Appalachian live variety show, plays City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7pm for the show’s tenth time and EBCI tribal member Lloyd Arneach Sr. and Museum of the Cherokee Indian education director Barbara Duncan will both perform.
