Husband charged with wife’s 2013 murder appears in federal court
Ernest D. Pheasant, Sr., 46, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), is charged with one count of first-degree murder in Indian Country. Pheasant made his initial court appearance on Monday, April 8, 2024, before U.S. Magistrate Judge W. Carleton Metcalf.

March proved to be another busy month as we reached the six-month milestone of our new administration.
Sexual Assault Awareness Walk held in Cherokee
On the morning of April 3 beginning at the Water Beetle Stage of the Cherokee Welcome Center, the Office of the Principal Chief and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Domestic Violence-Sexual Assault Program (DVSA) held a joint Sexual Assault Awareness event and walk in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The event was called Agwohiyu, meaning “I Believe.”

SPEAKING OF FAITH: Stuck in the middle…
Do we realize how scared those twelve men had to have been to have screamed out as they began to think they were seeing a ghost near them walking on the water? Those who were fishermen knew they’d never seen a man walking on the water like they saw one out in the middle of the water, in the rough sea, or at least thought they were seeing one. All of them had cried out in fear.
COMMENTARY: Is exclusion serious?
The ability to banish or exclude people from our lands “is an inherent and essential part of Tribal sovereignty. It is indispensable to the Tribe’s autonomy and self-governance.” Sounds serious to our government.

Who thinks they will go to a junior varsity football game and see the best catch they’ve seen all year? Not me, but that’s exactly what happened on the humid evening of Thursday, Sept. 20 as the Cherokee JV Braves traveled to Swain County.
JV FOOTBALL: Maroon Devils top Braves 22-8
The final score didn’t reflect how close the game really was between the Cherokee JV Braves and the Swain County JV Maroon Devils on the last day of summer. Cherokee lost 22-8 at Swain on the muggy evening of Thursday, Sept. 20.
CROSS COUNTRY: Cherokee hosts large meet, CMS teams place second
With Hurricane Florence looming and edging its way to western North Carolina, runners from throughout western North Carolina converged on Cherokee High School for the Cherokee XC Invitational.

Lucille Walker Radford, 101, of Cherokee, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Cherokee Indian Hospital. She was born on Dec. 31, 1921 in Swain County to the late William McKinley Walker and Amanda Catt Walker. She attended Bryson City Church of God.

Arneach to kick off Summer Program at Jackson County Library
