Suspect arraigned in decade-long cold case homicide of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant
Ernest Dewayne Pheasant, 46, was arraigned on the afternoon of Nov. 21, 2023, in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians criminal court by Judge Monty Beck for the murder of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant.
EBCI/Shawnee effort to remove state tribes from NCAI thwarted
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, along with the Shawnee Tribe, sought a constitutional amendment for the NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) that would bar state-recognized tribes from voting membership.

Cherokee youth learning about raising chickens
The EBCI Cooperative Extension Office was full of smiles and the chirps of baby chickens ready to go to their new homes. It was distribution night for the Cherokee 4-H Youth Poultry Project as Sally Dixon and Benjamin Collette gave 10-12 chicks to each of the families in attendance at the event on the evening of Thursday, July 15.

Men have been testing their mettle and their metal in the form of iron horse racing since 1912 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Speed Week is held Aug. 11-17 at the Flats and Cherokee is being represented by one of the members of the Cherokee Blue Ridge Run event team.

Rosalie Lewis passed away at Novant Presbyterian Hospital on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, due to complications from flu-related pneumonia. Her 17-day battle with the illness was a true testament to her mental and physical strength.
