Flint Gap Fire update (Sept. 19)
Firefighters observed little fire activity on the Flint Gap Fire yesterday, Wednesday, Sept. 18. While the current acreage estimate is 58 acres, only a few areas are actively burning within the perimeter. The fire is 0 percent contained; however, firefighters observed only 12 areas with heat along the perimeter yesterday.
Kuwohi name restored as BGN approves application
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) approved an application on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024 that restores the name of Clingman’s Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), to its original Cherokee name, Kuwohi (mulberry place).
CCS School Board holds Sept. 16 meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, Sept. 16, in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:47 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

Ten Cherokee cyclists stood on the mound at Kituwah on a sunny, late spring evening preparing themselves for a journey through history and emotion. A send-off event was held for the 2023 Remember the Removal Ride (RTR) at Kituwah on the evening of Friday, June 2.

On the Dec. 12, 2023, Cherokee Court Domestic Violence docket, nine defendants were being charged with criminal domestic and dating violence, another 19 defendants were there to answer civil domestic violence charges.

The craziness of the holiday season is upon us. Here at the Tribe, everyone starts gearing up for gearing down around this time. Everyone knows that it is time to line up all those projects that can be processed and implemented before the calendar year ends need to be worked on with a soon endgame in mind, and those with little chance of finishing in 2023 must be prepped for the holiday pause so that they may be cranked back up when critical services like EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Finance return from the holiday break.

Athletes are always chasing rings and one member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) is chasing five in the form of the Olympic rings.

Cherokee Christmas Comic Con opens Thursday
On Thursday, Dec. 17, the doors will open on Cherokee’s first ever comic book convention. The inaugural Cherokee Christmas Comic Con, or C4, as fans are calling it, will kick off at two separate sites, The Cherokee Phoenix Theatres and the Acquoni Expo Center.
