Dinilawigi tables, withdraws several pieces of legislation during September session
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) tabled several ordinances during the Orders of the Day portion of its regular session on Thursday, Sept. 4 including one designed to solve an upcoming vacancy on the Cherokee School Board. Several of these were tabled for more discussion before being brought to the floor for a vote.
Renovations have been completed at Cherokee Post Office
The Cherokee Post Office has been expanded and gotten a facelift in a few other parts. Those renovations have been ongoing for the past few months and were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the rainy morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Big Cove Ponds dredging plans happening soon
The three ponds on Big Cove Road that sit adjacent to KOA campground, which are owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and managed by EBCI Fisheries & Wildlife Management, were drained mid-summer to prepare for dredging due to low water levels and high water temperatures.

WCU Board of Trustees elect Casey Cooper as its chair
Western Carolina University’s (WCU) Board of Trustees elected Casey Cooper as its chair during a special called meeting Wednesday, July 10, replacing former chair Kathy Greeley, who was recently appointed to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.
Tribal Cannery hard at work for a healthier community
On a drizzly afternoon in Aniwodihi (Painttown), two women are hard at work preserving food for the Cherokee community. The Tribal Cannery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), which serves everyone, is located in the new Tribal Foods Distribution building at 2260 Old Mission Road in Cherokee, N.C.
Culture and language revitalization from Cherokee to Ecuador
Two members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and alumni of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), Colby Taylor and Juanita Paz-Chalacha, recently returned from a cultural exchange trip in Ecuador along with Kituwah Preservation Education Program Education Curriculum Developer Hartwell Francis.

Several times a year, we are enlisted, or solicited, to do volunteer work for our community. Community work is noble work indeed and should be done. But the way many of us do it and what we call volunteering is not noble at all.

The Cherokee High School track and field team traveled to Hayesville on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 1 to participate in a tri-school meet with Hayesville and Hiwassee Dam.
Fire Mountain Inferno returns for third year
May 22 marked the beginning of the Third Annual Fire Mountain Inferno, drawing in mountain bikers from all of the region to participate in the two-day event held in Cherokee.

Davy Arch, others will share Cherokee heritage at Hayesville festival
Well-known storyteller and artist Davy Arch will tell Cherokee stories and will demonstrate flint knapping, carving, and mask making at the Cherokee Heritage Festival in Hayesville on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10am – 3pm.
