Schatz, Curtis introduce Tribal Energy Fairness Act to lower costs, strengthen tribal energy sovereignty
U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and John Curtis (R-Utah) introduced the Tribal Energy Fairness Act on Thursday, March 27, bipartisan legislation aimed at expanding Tribal access to federal energy programs by removing unnecessary barriers and making technical fixes.
N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal updates statewide response to western N.C. wildfires
N.C. State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and the N.C. Forestry Service briefed Governor Josh Stein on Friday, March 28 at the Tryon Equestrian Center in Polk County on ongoing fire activities and response efforts, including the three largest wildfires burning in the county.

The Museum of the Cherokee People (MotCP) and its board of directors have announced the creation of two crucial new roles within the organization.
Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launches Hinigoliya
Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launched a new reading program, Hinigoliya (you and I read), on Tuesday, March 5. Hinigoliya is a reading initiative to promote early literacy for children in kindergarten to third grade within the five-county service area (Graham, Cherokee, Swain, Jackson, Haywood).
Speakers’ Consortium holds quarterly meeting in Cherokee

JV FOOTBALL: Braves double offensive yards in 48-6 defeat of Andrews
The Cherokee JV Braves gained a total of 321 yards of offense while holding the Andrews JV Wildcats to only 161 during a game at Ray Kinsland Stadium on the beautiful fall evening of Thursday, Sept. 23.
VOLLEYBALL: Lady Braves seeing success through positive attitudes
For the first time in many years, the Cherokee Lady Braves varsity volleyball team is having a winning season, and players and coaches are attributing much of that success to positive attitudes and a can-do work environment.

Michael Harold Owl (Pop Pop), 71, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. Born in Trenton, N.J., and longtime resident of Cherokee, he was the son of the Samuel and Mary Jane Owl and husband of the late Kathryn Owl.
