The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has a community flush with artistic talent and history, and the Cherokee Arts and Crafts Act was passed to help with its sustainability.

In recognition of Older Americans Month, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Senior Citizens Program hosted an event at the old Cherokee High School on the morning of Friday, May 9.

Chief’s Awards presented
The Chief’s Awards were presented by Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks and Taline Ugvwiyu (Vice Chief) Alan B. Ensley in the Cherokee Tribal Council House on the morning of Wednesday, May 8.
Shannon Swimmer named director of WCU Cherokee Center
After several years working in tribal law, Swimmer has returned to WCU in a new capacity, as director of the Cherokee Center.
Crowe receives Lula Owl Gloyne Person of Excellence Award
The Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation has announced Susan Crowe, manager of the CIHA (Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority) Eye Clinic, as the recipient of the 2023 Lula Owl Gloyne Person of Excellence Award.

CROSS COUNTRY: Varsity Braves win team event at Eagles Meet
The Cherokee Braves varsity cross country team took first place at the Hiwassee Dam Eagle Meet held at the Murphy High School XC Course in Murphy on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 29.
Cherokee youth giving triathlon a go
The sport of triathlon is a tough discipline that involves swimming, cycling, and running combined into one race. Dvdaya, Ogana, and Uweluga Swimmer and Joscelyn and Cambry Stamper, all members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, participated in the Sugar Creek Youth Triathlon in Greer, S.C. in early September.
CROSS COUNTRY: Cherokee runners place at Bulldog XC Meet
Members of the Cherokee High School and Middle School cross country teams traveled to Murphy High School for the Bulldog XC Meet on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 25.

OBITUARY: Tony Steven Taylor
Tony Steven Taylor, 61, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at Cherokee Indian Hospital. Tony was born Nov. 1, 1963 to the late Sandi Taylor Reagan. He loved his Tarheels, his babies, and taking care of his loved ones.
OBITUARY: LilyMay Smith Tucker
LilyMay Smith Tucker, age 87, of the Wolftown/Big Y community, passed away at her residence after an extended illness on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024. She is the daughter of the late John and Ollie Smith.

Ned Armachain passed on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024, in Cherokee, N.C. He was a resident of Tsali Care Center.

The award-winning creative team from Western Carolina University that has done everything from destroying the world with a production of “War of the Worlds” to capturing the spirit of broadcasts from the Cotton Club with their “golden age of radio” re-creations has announced its selection for 2015.
BOOK REVIEW: Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States sets the record straight
Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz has penned a work designed to set the record straight with her concise account of the major points of aboriginal history in relation to the U.S. in “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States.”
