EBCI Planning Board discusses several projects
Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks chaired the Feb. 18 meeting of the Planning Board of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). Several items were discussed.
Haywood Co. man pleads guilty to first-degree murder
District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch announced on Monday, Feb. 24 that the Haywood County man who killed an Uber driver, Julia Holland of Candler, will spend the rest of his life in prison.
CCS School Board holds Feb. 3 meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools met on Monday, Feb. 3 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:44 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

COMMENTARY: Voices
In activism, you often hear the term “voice.” You hear the saying, “give a voice to the voiceless.” What is a voice? What does it mean to lend a voice?
COMMENTARY: Approving adult-use cannabis is common sense
Cannabis has been debated by the tribal government of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) for going on a decade now. EBCI voters voted overwhelmingly for a referendum in September 2023 approving adult-use (sometimes referred to as recreational) of cannabis.
COMMENTARY: Those who can, do.
I have watched as some have commented on “investigative reporting” and why we don’t do more of it. They imply that either there is a lack of interest in providing that type of reporting or that somehow there is a pressure or lean toward upholding or towing the “company line” when it comes to issues involving tribal officials and their actions. Neither opinion is accurate.

Ayden Kanott, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been selected to participate in the 2022 DREAM All-American Rising Stars football all-star game on Monday, Jan. 17 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

Soon, the Qualla Boundary will have a course as the Fire Mountain Disc Golf Sanctuary is set to open in Cherokee in the next few months.

OBITUARY: David E. McCoy Sr.
David E. McCoy Sr., 64, of the Birdtown Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Soloman (Bud) and Winona Delozier McCoy.
OBITUARY: Edmund (Eddie) Catolster
Edmund (Eddie) Catolster, 59, of the Wolftown Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Menoch Catolster and Mary Bell Welch Catolster.
OBITUARY: Larry Douglas Armachain Jr
Larry Douglas Armachain Jr., 42, of Cherokee passed away July 28, 2024, after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1982, to the late Larry Armachain and Pearl Wolfe. He was a crafter who was very adept at carving, and beadwork.
