Siweumptewa named Junior Miss Cherokee
Destiny Siweumptewa, 14, a member of the Long Hair Clan from the Birdtown Community, was named 2018-19 Junior Miss Cherokee during a pageant held at the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds on the night of Thursday, Oct. 4.
Body of missing woman found in Park, family releases statement
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 3 that search crews found the body of Mitzie Sue “Susan” Clements, 53, from Cleves, Ohio, after an extensive, week-long search.

CHS improves Graduation, Dropout Rates
Cherokee High School had a graduation rate for the 2010-11 school year of 78.82 percent that was higher than the state (72.8 percent) and national average (71.7 percent) according to school officials. That rate marks a vast improvement for the school which recorded a 49.59 percent graduation rate the year before.
Cherokee Youth Council represents at UNITY Conference
The Cherokee Youth Council represented the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week, taking 16 young adults ranging from ages 11 to 19, the largest group across the states so far. This year’s Unity Conference hosted over 1,000 Native Americans from all over the United States.
