CCS School Board holds May meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, May 6 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:44pm by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

Scare-okee Committee continues to eye improvements.
The Scare-okee Committee met recently near the BIA Parking Lot and Oconaluftee Island Park to iron out additional details of the layout of this year’s “Trick or Treat Night in Scare-okee” event.
The Center for Native Health receives $30,000 Stewarding Native Lands Grant
The Center for Native Health recently received a $30,000.00 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the efforts of The Center for Native Health’s ᎢᏯ ih ya: EBCI Youth River Cane Project.
EBCI Cooperative Extension gives Annual Garden Contest awards
The 2023 EBCI Cooperative Extension Office’s Annual Garden Contest awards were given on the evening of Monday, Sept. 18 at the Yellowhill Activity Center. The contest judging occurred in the second week of July.

Cherokee has a long, detailed historical record. We have been blessed with tenacious record-keeping by our ancestors, the creation of the syllabary by Sequoyah, the continued passing of knowledge, culture and language through generations.

We are not a casino town. Ask anyone whose heart and soul are in this land and they will tell you quickly that this land, if it is to be called anything, if it should be defined by anything, that should be its connection to the Principal People.

It is no secret. There is a shortage of officials for amateur contests across our country. That shortage continues to grow and is causing significant challenges for high school athletics in the United States.
VOLLEYBALL: “It’s their moment!”: Lady Braves get historic win on Saturday
The Charles George Memorial Arena exploded as a Mountain Heritage ball sailed out of bounds giving the Cherokee Lady Braves a win in the first round of the 1A West volleyball playoffs. With the 3-0 win over the Lady Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 22, Cherokee advanced to the second round and also clinched its first playoff win in volleyball in school history.
FOOTBALL: Smith scores four TDs to lead Braves over Hayesville
Two minutes after scoring the go-ahead touchdown, Tso Smith, Cherokee Braves senior, intercepted a pass, a one-handed grab at that, in the end zone to seal the victory for Cherokee over Hayesville.
