EBCI leadership attends Tri-Council Meeting; resolution passed on Moccasin Bend
Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Tribal leadership attended the historic Tri-Council meeting recently, a significant gathering that unites the three sovereign Cherokee nations: the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, and the Cherokee Nation.
Teen drowns in Oconaluftee River
At approximately 5 p.m. on Monday, June 24, Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers and Cherokee Search and Rescue responded to a report that a teenager didn’t resurface after he lost his footing in the Oconaluftee River behind the Mountain Farm Museum in Cherokee, N.C.

EBCI selects its 2024 Remember the Removal candidates
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has selected seven tribal members to join riders from the Cherokee Nation this June on the annual Remember the Removal Ride (RTR). The ride will retrace the northern route of the Trail of Tear.
Braves showcase Broadway in fifth annual show
Songs and dances from Broadway filled the Chief Joyce Dugan Cultural Arts Center on the evening of Friday, Dec. 8. Students in the Cherokee Central Schools Dance and Musical Theatre Program put on the 5th Annual Braves on Broadway show.

COMMENTARY: Cherokee needs to prepare for NCAI
In November 2023, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), the Shawnee Tribe, and the Ute Indian Tribe proposed two amendment changes for NCAI’s membership eligibility requirements, which would restrict voting and individual membership to federally recognized tribes.

BASKETBALL: Lady Braves win SMC tournament title in barn-burner
Whitney Rogers, Cherokee sophomore, hit a free throw with 19.4 seconds left on the clock in overtime to seal the deal as the Lady Braves won the Smoky Mountain Conference (SMC) tournament on Friday, Feb. 17. Cherokee defeated the Robbinsville Lady Black Knights 72-71 in a barn-burner at the Ken Solesbee Athletic Center at Andrews High School.
