Long to remain in detention
The attorney representing Benjamin Cody Long, who has been accused of a December 2019 cyber-attack against the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has put forth three motions to reopen the defendant’s detention hearing since Jan. 2.
Park facilities closed due to inclement weather
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced that Sugarlands Visitor Center, Oconaluftee Visitor Center, and Elkmont Campground will be closed for the remainder of Thursday, Feb. 6 due to inclement weather throughout the region.
EBCI Investment Committee reports 5 percent growth last quarter
The EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Investment Committee gave a report to Tribal Council on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in which they detailed their overall account growth was over 5 percent for the last quarter.

It was a good night for Cherokee basketball as both varsity teams defeated visiting Highlands at home on Friday, Jan. 31. The Lady Braves (17-2), currently ranked #6 in the state Maxpreps.com poll, beat the Lady Highlanders 76-31, and the Braves (10-9) pulled above .500 on the year with a 71-50 victory.
