N.C. state tribes and tribal organizations to receive $10 million in state funding
North Carolina’s American Indian communities will receive a total of $10 million in state funds this year to support programs and services to help with pandemic recovery. This year’s state budget allocated money to each of the state recognized tribes and tribal organizations.
Food truck rodeo coming to Harrah’s Cherokee
Three Cherokee-owned food trucks will be setting up at The Cherokee Convention Center this Friday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 5 to serve any and all who want an Indian dinner or Cherokee fare.
Stamper sentenced for abusive sexual contact of a minor
Forrest Cole Stamper, 28, of Cherokee, was sentenced on Monday, Jan. 31 to 48 months in prison and 15 years of supervised release for abusive sexual contact of a minor in Indian Country, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Cherokee students learn about natural resources, environment
Two days prior to Earth Day, the EBCI Natural Resources Program hosted second grade students from Cherokee Central Schools in a program to teach them about Cherokee’s natural resources and environment.
Fundraising efforts going well for Warriors’ London trip
Later this year, members of the Warriors of Anikituhwa will travel to London, England as ambassadors of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and efforts to raise funds for their trip are going well. The trip will total around $30,000 for the group, and so far around $3,000 has been raised.
New Kituwah Academy students plant garden
The Cherokee tradition of raising food is being passed down to the younger generation at the New Kituwah Academy. Students planted kale, mustard greens, creasy greens, and onions in two raised garden beds at the school on the morning of Wednesday, April 18.

After taking an early lead, the Cherokee Lady Braves were edged 2-1 at home on Wednesday, April 1 by Mitchell.

Seven youth members from the Cherokee community closed out a five-week Kayak Workshop Series by kayaking down the Oconaluftee River from the Blue Ridge Parkway Bridge to the Cherokee Island Park on Monday, March 30.
