Swain Co. man found guilty of rape and sexual assault
A jury in Swain County found Robert Simpson, 33, guilty Thursday, March 17 of six felony counts of rape and sexual assault, District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch and Sheriff Curtis Cochran said in a joint statement.

Council discusses proposed change to per capita distribution dates
A proposal currently before Tribal Council would change the dates for per capita distribution to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). Ord. No. 135 (2022), submitted by former EBCI First Lady Cyndi Lambert, was discussed by Council in a work session on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 16.
