Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks denounces Lumbee Bill, supports Congressman Edwards’ defense of tribal sovereignty
Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief Michell) Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) expressed gratitude on Thursday, Sept. 26 for Congressman Chuck Edwards’ (R-N.C.) support of tribal sovereignty, particularly his opposition to the Lumbee bill.

On the afternoon of Sept. 18, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) held a work session to discuss autism awareness on the Qualla Boundary.
MMIW: Tamara Seay
Tamara Seay, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), gave birth to a baby girl, Jailyn Bird, on Sept. 22, 2004. Just two years later, in January 2006, Tamara, who was 18-years-old, was found murdered in the Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Three Cherokee men were charged and convicted in connection with her death.

The ability to banish or exclude people from our lands “is an inherent and essential part of Tribal sovereignty. It is indispensable to the Tribe’s autonomy and self-governance.” Sounds serious to our government.

How many basketfuls of the boy’s lunch leftovers remained? What a miracle that was in the middle of that region with no large cities nearby! There were at least 5,000 men, their wives, and children, but only men were counted, not their wives and children who were also fed.

During a home basketball game in the Charles George Memorial Arena on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 6, Ray Kinsland was recognized for his 59 years of service to the Cherokee community and especially Cherokee Central Schools athletics.
Two tribal members participate in Swain’s Signing Day
A total of three athletes, including two EBCI tribal members, signed letters of intent to play college sports during a Signing Day event at Swain County High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Our beautiful Emily Jane Arkansas, age 23, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, April 21, 2023. She was born Feb. 21, 2000 in Sylva, N.C.
OBITUARY: Carol S. Welch
Carol S. Welch, 83, of the Big Cove Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 28. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late James Smith and the late Helen Bradley Smith.

Mary Ann Lambert, 58, of Cherokee, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at her residence. She was born on Monday, Sept. 14, 1964, in Lakeland, Fla., the daughter Bessie Murphy Hampton and the late Frank Hampton.
