CCS School Board discusses budget cuts

The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools met on Monday, Nov. 6, and the board had an in-depth discussion on their budget for fiscal year 2023. The board ultimately decided to decrease staff salary raises from 15 percent to 7.5 percent to decrease their budget by $2 million as requested by Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Tribal Council.

Cherokee Summer Carnival returning

After a long year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Cherokee Summer Carnival returns to the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds on July 6-17.  Promoters have announced that C & M Southern Midways from Eastabogo, Ala. will field almost 30 amusement rides, games, and food units that will feature some of the newest rides in the amusement industry.

Tribal member admitted to N.C. State Bar

Mara Nelson, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been admitted to the North Carolina State Bar Association.  After passing the bar exam recently, Nelson took the oath of office to enter the bar from District 30B Superior Court Judge Bradley Letts, also an EBCI tribal member, on the morning of Tuesday, June 15.

Bradley, Day sign college letters of intent

Cherokee High School seniors Marley Bradley and Justus Day both signed letters of intent to continue their sports careers at the next level.  In a ceremony in the Cherokee High School Fieldhouse on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 30, Bradley signed to the cheerleading squad at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga. and Day signed to play basketball at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.
