Cherokee World War II hero honored
A Cherokee hero was celebrated and recognized for his military service during an event at the Yellowhill Activity Center on the evening of Monday, May 13.

We kicked off April by kicking off the 2024 Senior Games at the Peaches Squirrell Sports and Recreation Complex! The Vice Chief and I were excited to see the impressive turnout, with over 170 seniors participating.

“His presence mattered,” said Mary “Missy” Crowe, an elder of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) from Elawodi (Yellowhill). She was speaking of her relative, Gabriel (Gabe) Thor Crow, a noted Cherokee basket maker, who has been missing since early this year.

The Museum of the Cherokee Indian (MCI) is expanding its leadership with the appointment of two new directors.
WNC Honors given to EBCI communities
The culmination of this year’s program occurred via Zoom on Thursday, Dec. 2 with over 100 community leaders and volunteers from 13 western North Carolina Counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). Eight EBCI community centers were honored with cash awards and recognition, and seven won Best in Class awards.

On April 6, 2023, Tribal Council passed Resolution No. 559 (2023), which was submitted by the Community Club Council. The resolution is the Community Club Council’s request for a referendum vote at the General Election on Sept. 7, 2023, to immediately repeal the Charter and Governing Document and replace it with a draft Constitution that was written by the Constitution Committee.

LADIES GOLF: Lady Braves compete in regionals
Three members of the Cherokee Lady Braves golf team competed in the 1A/2A Western Golf Regional Championship at Cedar Rock Country Club in Cedar Rock on Monday, Oct. 15.

Cherokee’s defense held Andrews to 128 total yards and shut them out in a game on the chilly, fall evening of Friday, Oct. 12 at Ray Kinsland Stadium.
LADIES GOLF: Three Lady Braves qualify for Regional Meet
Three members of the Cherokee Lady Braves golf team have qualified for the 1A/2A West Regional competition starting Monday, Oct. 15 at Cedar Rock Golf and Country Club in Lenoir. A total of 58 young ladies will compete for the 26 spots to qualify for the state meet on Oct. 22-23 at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.

Roy Adams Lambert, 88, of Cherokee, N.C., passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023. He was born in Cherokee on June 7, 1934 to the late Hugh and Ava Lambert and was proud of his Cherokee heritage.
