Cherokee woman charged for inflicting serious bodily injury on a child in Indian Country
Shawnenna Caroline Roland, 39, of Cherokee, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is facing federal charges for child abuse, child neglect, and assault in Indian country, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) tabled several ordinances during the Orders of the Day portion of its regular session on Thursday, Aug. 7. Several of these were tabled for more discussion before being brought to the floor for a vote.

The Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation has announced Susan Crowe, manager of the CIHA (Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority) Eye Clinic, as the recipient of the 2023 Lula Owl Gloyne Person of Excellence Award.

COMMENTARY: Tsalagi Minute signs would provide education around town
Several years ago, the One Feather started a weekly informational graphic we call the Tsalagi Minute. I think it would be neat to see Tsalagi Minute signs made, featuring some of these graphics, that could be placed around the Qualla Boundary – most specifically in and around downtown Cherokee and the cultural district.
COMMENTARY: We need to be more like Dave.
Dave Russell is my counterpart at The Sylva Herald and Ruralite. We have a dandy working relationship with the Herald and it sounds like he and I share some commonalities when it comes to managing and reporting.

Athletes are always chasing rings and one member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) is chasing five in the form of the Olympic rings.
ON THE SIDELINES: Fans should be allowed on percentage, not a set amount
I believe that all fan allowances should be based on a percentage of the venue capacity rather than a set amount for each event.

OBITUARY: Christopher Hayes Calhoun “Hayes”
Christopher Hayes Calhoun “Hayes”, 64, of the Big Cove Community, passed away peacefully Sept. 26, 2024 at Frye Medical Center in Hickory, N.C. He was born July 22, 1960 to the late Walker and Evelyn Hornbuckle Calhoun.

Robert Phillip Haire, 88, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024. Phil was born May 1, 1936 in Caretta, W.V., to Herman and Pauline Jackson Haire. His family later moved to West Jefferson, N.C., where he grew up.
