Flint Gap Fire determined to be caused by lightning
Great Smoky Mountains National Park fire officials and fire investigators have determined that the Flint Gap Fire was started by lightning from a recent summer storm.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park continues initial attack efforts on the Flint Gap Fire. Two suppression modules are assisting with initial attack today, Thursday, Aug. 29. An additional module will arrive tomorrow.

The bunker renovation and re-grassing project that began in March at the Sequoyah National Golf Club are now completed.
NCHSAA: There will be sports, just an amended schedule
Despite COVID-19, high school student-athletes will be able to participate in sports this year, but it will be under a much different schedule than usual.

Larry Phillip “Phil” Allen Maney, 82, of Fall Branch, Tenn., passed into the loving arms of his Savior on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023. A native of Cherokee, Phil was born May 24, 1941, to the late Jesse J. Maney and Muriel Smith Maney.

Clifton M. Owle, 75, of the Birdtown Community, passed away due to an extended illness, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023. A native of Cherokee, he was born April 2, 1948, to the late Jack Clifton Owle and Pauline Lambert.

WCU to host open air Jazz Festival on April 26
Western Carolina University’s annual Jazz Festival will feature performers including special guest guitarist and composer Paul Bollenback and will be held on an open-air stage on campus during the late afternoon and evening of Saturday, April 26.
