The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools met on Monday, Oct. 2. Superintendent Consuela ‘Consie’ Girty swore in three new board members: Yellowhill Rep.  Jennifer Thompson, Big Y Rep. Tara Reed-Cooper, and Painttown Rep. Micah Swimmer.

Museum changing name, branding, and moving forward

The Museum of the Cherokee Indian has changed its name and branding and is looking to further expand its mission of educating people.  Announced officially on Tuesday, Oct. 3 during the Cherokee Indian Fair Parade, the new name of the facility will be the Museum of the Cherokee People – but, there’s more to it than that.

On April 6, 2023, Tribal Council passed Resolution No. 559 (2023), which was submitted by the Community Club Council.  The resolution is the Community Club Council’s request for a referendum vote at the General Election on Sept. 7, 2023, to immediately repeal the Charter and Governing Document and replace it with a draft Constitution that was written by the Constitution Committee.
