Whitewater Landing opens officially in Cherokee
The Whitewater Landing project, located off of Whitewater Dr. in Cherokee, N.C., was opened officially with a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 27. The park has a playground, a walking book trail, restrooms, a river observation deck, and a water landing area for small boats and tubes.

CPF grants awarded to EBCI Commerce Division departments
Three departments under the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Commerce Division have received grants from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.
CPF gives grant funding to culturally-based leadership programs
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation (CPF) has awarded the Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute (RKLI), $384,500 and its college undergraduate program, the Jones-Bowman Leadership Award Program, $153,000.00 to carry out their mission to create a community of life-long, selfless leaders deeply rooted in Cherokee culture.
Cherokee Historical Association and the Center for Cultural Preservation to host Cherokee cultural event and film screening
Cherokee Historical Association has partnered with the Center for Cultural Preservation to screen “Nature’s Wisdom Thru Native Eyes”, by award winning documentary filmmaker David Weintraub.

COMMENTARY: Thoughts on Tsali Care Work Session
After reading Robert Jumper’s commentary: Irons in the fire, I feel the need to comment on the Tribal Council work session regarding Tsali Care Center. I attended the meeting on Aug. 8, and I appreciate Chief Hicks and Tribal Council for making sure this meeting happened.
COMMENTARY: Irons in the fire
Running a government providing services for 16,000 constituents must be a daunting task, to say the least. And to that the stress of administering a conjectured an approximate $300 million budget and you might see why leaders of such organizations are overly cautious and why phrases like “out of an abundance of caution” pop up on the regular.

The Cherokee High School varsity track team hosted Hayesville and Rosman on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 19.
WRESTLING: Cherokee participates in tri-school meet at Hayesville
The Cherokee High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Hayesville High School on Thursday, May 13 to participate in a tri-school meet with Hayesville and Rosman.
TRACK AND FIELD: Cherokee hosts tri-school meet
Cherokee hosted a tri-school meet including Robbinsville and Tri-County Early College on the afternoon of Friday, May 14.

OBITUARY: Frances Fannie Cucumber
Frances Fannie Cucumber, 90, passed away at Tsali Care Center on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, and the daughter of the late James Cucumber and Elizabeth (Reed) Cucumber.
OBITUARY: Magan Leigh Wachacha
Magan Leigh Wachacha, 45, of Cherokee, passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at Mission Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born on Feb. 10, 1979, in Andrews, to Berdina Wolfe Salazar and the late Herman Wachacha. Megan was an avid basket maker where she displayed her work in many craft shops around Cherokee and the Snowbird communities.

Benjamin “Benji” Scott Martinez, age 48, of the Birdtown Community, Cherokee, N.C., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Nov. 13, 2024.
