A detention hearing was held for the murder case of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 28 in Cherokee Tribal Court with Judge Sunshine Parker presiding.
Suspect arraigned in decade-long cold case homicide of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant
Ernest Dewayne Pheasant, 46, was arraigned on the afternoon of Nov. 21, 2023, in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians criminal court by Judge Monty Beck for the murder of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant.
EBCI/Shawnee effort to remove state tribes from NCAI thwarted
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, along with the Shawnee Tribe, sought a constitutional amendment for the NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) that would bar state-recognized tribes from voting membership.

Three Cherokee citizens are featured in a new art show at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. Luzene Hill, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, joins Cherokee Nation citizens Brenda Mallory and Kade Twist in the show entitled “Returns: Cherokee Diaspora and Art” which will run from Saturday, June 11 and runs until Sept. 4.
