CCS School Board holds meeting on May 14
The Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) School Board met on the evening of May 14 at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. The meeting was called to order at 3:33 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
Tribal Council adopts Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day
On the morning of June 6, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 212 (2024), recognizing every Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving as Tsalagi Aniwonisgi Didanvdadisdi (Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day) to honor the lives of fluent Cherokee speakers who have passed.
Bingo could be coming back to Cherokee
Cherokee Tribal Bingo closed in 2020 due to COVID-19, and it never re-opened. Now, officials of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are looking to start the operation again.

NCTOTA to mark Cherokee town of Sand Town site
The North Carolina Trail of Tears Association (NCTOTA) and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin have partnered to mark the site of the post-Removal Cherokee town of Sand Town – located at 542 St. Johns Church Road in Franklin, N.C.

So, one of the things my staff has told me about our offices is that we have a ghost. No foolin’. They tell me that there was an apparition that sometimes stood at or near the door of my office.

Moses was sent to a world leader. He was a stutterer, sent to do one thing, and that was to speak to Pharaoh of Egypt. One does not send a stutterer to a world leader to make a speech, but that is what God does.
COMMENTARY: Be an influencer.
There are those of us who are gung-ho about exercising our rights, especially the right to vote, to the fullest. Especially when it comes to tribal elections, because in the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Charter & Governing Document, civil rights are almost non-existent.

WRESTLING: 1A West Regional held at Robbinsville; Taylor qualifies for state
Wrestlers from 24 schools throughout western North Carolina filled the gym at Robbinsville High School on the morning of Tuesday, June 15 as the school hosted the 1A West Regional tournament.
WRESTLING: Three Cherokee wrestlers take second at SMC championship
Three Cherokee High School varsity wrestlers made the finals at the 2021 Smoky Mountain Conference championship meet held at Robbinsville High School on Thursday, June 10. Jaylynne Esqvuiel (113), Braden Taylor (160), and Ian Crowe (182) came in second place in the conference in their respective divisions.
ON THE SIDELINES: Multi-sport athletes abound at Cherokee High
Several weeks ago, I took photos of Jonathan Frady competing at a track and field meet at Cherokee High School (CHS). Then, less than an hour after it ended, I took photos of him pitching six innings in a baseball game on campus.

Gregg Allman, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is heading to Cherokee.
WCU Wind Ensemble to present concert Oct. 28
The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the university’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Reel Big Fish, Ace Hood to present Homecoming concert at WCU
A concert featuring the ska-punk band Reel Big Fish and rapper Ace Hood will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Regional Activity Center as part of festivities associated with WCU’s Homecoming weekend.
