Cherokee Police Commission holds February meeting
The Cherokee Police Commission meeting was held on the afternoon of Feb. 8 in the Ginger Lynn Welch Large Conference Room. The meeting was called to order at 12 p.m. by Chairperson Gene Tunney Crowe.
Council passes resolution recognizing March as Indigenous Languages Month
On the morning of Thursday, March 7, the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) passed Res. No. 131 (2024) recognizing March as Indigenous Languages Month, and March 27 as Indigenous Languages Day.
Council approves change to Town Hall law
Three days after the latest Town Hall of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), Tribal Council approved legislation to change the tribal law regarding when the meetings are held. During its regular session on Thursday, March 7, Tribal Council unanimously approved Res. No. 137 (2024) that was submitted by EBCI Vice Chief Alan B. Ensley.

On Friday, March 10, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was presented posthumously in honor of Lambert Wilson to his longtime partner, Jenny Holland. This award is North Carolina’s highest civilian award, given to those who have made notable contributions to their community.

COMMENTARY: Making the language a priority
We have watched as tribal officials and language proponents desperately plead with the community to get more involved and engaged in the language. Millions of dollars have been spent on language education facilities, teacher education, and public relations efforts.

Ayden Kanott, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been selected to participate in the 2022 DREAM All-American Rising Stars football all-star game on Monday, Jan. 17 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

OBITUARY: Stephen Saunooke (Carlos)
Stephen Saunooke (Carlos), 53, of Cherokee, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Ruth Saunooke.
OBITUARY: Peggy Rosalie Lambert
Peggy Rosalie Lambert, 88, of Cherokee, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at Cherokee Indian Hospital. She was born on Sept. 5, 1935, to the late John A. Lambert and Sallie Ann Standingdeer Lambert.
