Qualla Boundary MMIW prepares for annual walk
The 6th Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relative Walk led by the Qualla Boundary MMIW (QBMMIW) grassroots organization is coming up on Saturday, May 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., beginning at the Storyteller’s Fire Pit of the Oconaluftee Island Park.

Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority has announced this year’s recipients of its prestigious annual awards. Dr. Winona Houser has been named Employee of the Year, and Lisa Hoyle has earned the esteemed Hayes Award for Quality and Safety.
Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority opens new PRC Customer Service Desk
Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) has announced the addition of a new dedicated Purchased and Referred Care (PRC) Customer Service Desk and staff, aimed at enhancing services for patients needing care outside of CIHA.

I’m a huge nerd and a fan of puns so I love the Cherokee word for squirrel – saloli. One of my favorite dad jokes is, “How does a squirrel cross the road? Saloli”.

You and I, as tribal members, have given lip service to the development of a constitution for decades. The most recent effort was six years in the making. Outreach programs, advertising, community club learning sessions, websites, social media pages, and more were provided to the community over those six years.

Last summer, my wife visited Ireland and one of the main things that stuck out with me from her trip was the idea of “Tidy Towns”; an idea I feel would work great here in Cherokee.

Over 1,500 participate in Opening Day Fish Tournament in Cherokee
A total of 1,573 anglers registered for the Opening Day Fish Tournament held in Cherokee on March 26-27 according to EBCI Fisheries & Wildlife Management. A total of 271 tagged fish were released with 112 of those being turned in. In all, 96 anglers turned in tags for a total cash payout of $4,025.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in Robbinsville meet
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team traveled to Robbinsville High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 23 to participate in a four-school meet along with Swain Co. and Hayesville. Following are results, per nc.milesplit, of all of CHS’s participants:

Charles Russell Davenport, age 38, of Whittier, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024 at Mission Hospital from heart complications. Charles comes from Stockholm, N.J.

The Cherokee Indian Fair organizers recently announced the addition of the bluegrass quintet Mountain Faith to the Fair schedule. They will perform on the amphitheater stage on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6pm.
