Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (June 2025)
Every few weeks, the One Feather will provide legislative updates on various pieces of federal legislation of interest to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The bills are shown in the order in which they were introduced.
Remember the Removal Riders begin their journey
The 2025 Remember the Removal (RTR) riders received a send-off from Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, on the evening of Friday, May 30. Riders will embark on the journey from New Echota, Ga., former capital of the Cherokee Nation, on Monday, June 2 and will arrive in Tahlequah, Okla. on Saturday, June 21.
New pavilion opens officially at Kituwah
An American bald eagle was perched in a nearby tree checking out the festivities as members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) gathered at Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, to open the new pavilion on site.

Record-breaking WSOP Circuit Event concludes at Harrah’s Cherokee
It was a record-breaking return to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort for the World Series of Poker’s (WSOP) 2022/23 Circuit season, its first of four stops, as a record-setting field of 1,558 entries were recorded through two starting flights and a $2,360,370 prize pool was generated.

This spring, Zoie Shuler set the 1A NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) record for the triple jump on her way to claiming two championships in Greensboro.
Atlanta Braves and 7G Foundation to host first-ever Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase
The Atlanta Braves and 7G Foundation will host the first ever Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase at Truist Park on July 16-17. The top 50 high school baseball players of Native American descent from around the country will participate in a pro-style workout on Saturday, July 16 and a showcase game on Sunday, July 17.

OBITUARY: Frances Fannie Cucumber
Frances Fannie Cucumber, 90, passed away at Tsali Care Center on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, and the daughter of the late James Cucumber and Elizabeth (Reed) Cucumber.
OBITUARY: Magan Leigh Wachacha
Magan Leigh Wachacha, 45, of Cherokee, passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at Mission Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born on Feb. 10, 1979, in Andrews, to Berdina Wolfe Salazar and the late Herman Wachacha. Megan was an avid basket maker where she displayed her work in many craft shops around Cherokee and the Snowbird communities.
OBITUARY: Benjamin “Benji” Scott Martinez
Benjamin “Benji” Scott Martinez, age 48, of the Birdtown Community, Cherokee, N.C., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Nov. 13, 2024.

Country group Rascal Flats and Man in the Mirror, a Tribute to the King of Pop, are set to play Harrah’s Cherokee Event Center this spring.
Willie and Merle to play Harrah’s Cherokee
Country music legends Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard are scheduled to play Harrah’s Cheroke Event Center together on Saturday, May 21 at 7:30pm.
