The Cherokee Police Commission met in the Ginger Lynn Welch Poke Salad Room on the afternoon of Thursday, April 10.
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) passes resolution for MMIP database
On the afternoon of April 3 during regular session, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council), voted unanimously to pass Res. No. 4775: A resolution to authorize and request the development of a single EBCI database of information and cases concerning Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP), submitted by Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks.
Pheasant sentenced to life in prison for 2013 murder
Ernest D. Pheasant Sr., 47, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, April 3, 2025 for the 2013 murder of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

CPF gives grant funding to culturally-based leadership programs
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation (CPF) has awarded the Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute (RKLI), $384,500 and its college undergraduate program, the Jones-Bowman Leadership Award Program, $153,000.00 to carry out their mission to create a community of life-long, selfless leaders deeply rooted in Cherokee culture.

BASKETBALL: Jordan Arkansas signs with Concordia University Texas
Jordan Arkansas, a Cherokee Braves senior and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, will be continuing his basketball journey in the Lone Star State. During a ceremony at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the afternoon of Monday, May 23, he signed a letter of intent to play for the Concordia University Texas (Austin, Texas) Tornados next year.

Four athletes from Cherokee High School qualified for the NCHSAA State Championship with their performances at the 1A West Regional meet on Saturday, May 14 at the East Burke High School track in Connelly Springs.

Justin Moses Ammons, age 39, a lifelong resident of the Wolftown Community, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, after an extended illness.
OBITUARY: Clyde “Bobby” Mathis
Clyde “Bobby” Mathis, 79, of the Towstring Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Charlie H. and Nora Lee Henry Mathis and husband of the late Rachel Mathews Mathis.
