Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) approves Executive Committee’s Strategic Plan for EBCI
Leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are looking four years out in addressing five of the Tribe’s most pressing needs. Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) approved the 2024-28 Strategic Plan by passing Res. No. 149 (2024), submitted by the EBCI Executive Committee, during a Special-Called Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) session on the morning of Thursday, March 28.
Sam Owl settles in as chief executive officer of Kituwah, LLC
Sam Owl, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), from Wayohi (Wolftown), is the new chief executive officer of Kituwah, LLC. Owl was on the Kituwah Economic Development Board (KEDB) since its inception. Owl succeeds Mark Hubble, who served as chief executive officer since the entity was formed in 2018.
Great Smoky Cannabis Company announces official grand opening
Qualla Enterprises, LLC, has announced the grand opening of the Great Smoky Cannabis Company will occur on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m.

Cherokee Musical Theatre to present “Sister Act”
The comedic antics of Deloris Van Cartier will come to life this spring in the Chief Joyce Dugan Cultural Arts Center as the Cherokee Central Schools Musical Theatre program presents “Sister Act”. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort opens Cherokee Outdoors shop
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort has announced a new addition to the resort’s retail collection, Cherokee Outdoors, an outdoor-focused specialty shop. The new retail store opened its doors on April 1 and offers hotel guests and visitors a variety of outdoor-focused apparel and gear from distinguished and sustainable brands.

Indigenous nations have been connected through trade routes for centuries before and after colonization. We traded food, beadwork, clothes, raw materials, anything useful or beautiful or both.

I, like many folks, came from a background of limited means – a family with a firm genealogy in Appalachia, genes from the Qualla Boundary through my father and genes from generations of Carolina mountain people from my mother.

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee Middle hosts seven-school meet
The Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track and field team hosted a seven-school meet on the afternoon of Monday, March 28 at the Cherokee High School track.
BASKETBALL: McMillan signs to play at East Central C.C.
Leilaya McMillan, a senior member of the Cherokee Lady Braves basketball team, will continue her basketball career at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss. She signed a letter of intent during an event held in the Charles George Memorial Arena on the morning of Wednesday, March 30.
Over 1,500 participate in Opening Day Fish Tournament in Cherokee
A total of 1,573 anglers registered for the Opening Day Fish Tournament held in Cherokee on March 26-27 according to EBCI Fisheries & Wildlife Management. A total of 271 tagged fish were released with 112 of those being turned in. In all, 96 anglers turned in tags for a total cash payout of $4,025.

Kathy “Momma Hatt” West, 66, of the Big Cove Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday Dec. 31, 2023.

Louise Ann Reed, 65 of the Snowbird Community, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at Cherokee Indian Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
