EBCI Code Talkers highlighted at Memorial Day observance
The heroic contributions of code talkers from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians during World War I were highlighted during the Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 26 in Cherokee, N.C. The event was hosted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143.

The Center for Native Health (CNH) has announced Kristina Hyatt as the program officer for Maternal & Child Health programming.
NAFOA announces Blankenship as new executive director
Following a rigorous search, NAFOA, founded as the Native American Finance Officers Association, has named Cory M. Blankenship, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, as its new executive director. He will officially assume the role on Sept. 30.
Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute holds Right Path completion ceremonies and inductions
The Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute held the completion ceremony on Aug. 22 for the Dinedi Eginelv (To Give What Was Given to Us), and the Anigiduwagi Iyunadvnedi (Kituwah Ways), Adult Leadership Programs at the Yellowhill Activity Center. Both programs are advanced levels of the Duyugodv’i Right Path Adult Leadership Program. The most advanced level is Dinedi Eginelv.

FOOTBALL: Braves beat Starmount in first round of playoffs
The Cherokee Braves (3-8), the 24th seed in the 1A state playoffs, traveled to the 8th seed, Starmount Rams (7-4), on the evening of Friday, Nov. 4 and came away with a 28-21 victory.

OBITUARY: Carly Dea Maples
Carly Dea Maples, 47, of the Birdtown Community, passed away peacefully with family by her side Monday, Nov. 18, 2024. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of Linda Maples of Cherokee, and George O. Burgess of Franklin, N.C.
OBITUARY: Karen Lynn George
Karen Lynn George, daughter of late Jennie Lossie-George and Alfred George, was born on Aug. 30h, 1965 in Cherokee, N.C. She went to be home with the lord on Nov. 16, 2024.
OBITUARY: Frances Fannie Cucumber
Frances Fannie Cucumber, 90, passed away at Tsali Care Center on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, and the daughter of the late James Cucumber and Elizabeth (Reed) Cucumber.
