January is highest COVID month for Cherokee
January 2022 has seen the highest number of new COVID-19 cases reported in the Cherokee community out of any month since the pandemic began. And, the month isn’t over yet.

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued a ruling on Friday, Jan. 21 declining to overturn the McGirt decision from 2020 – a move that tribal leaders are hailing as a victory for sovereignty.
Park sets visitation record with 14.1 million visits in 2021
Great Smoky Mountains National Park experienced the busiest year on record with 14,137,812 visits. Visitation exceeded the 2019 record by 1.5 million visits and 2020 visitation by more than 2 million visits.

Cherokee musical theater to present “Shrek: The Musical” and more in May
The Cherokee High School musical theater and choral programs have four events set in May including the school’s third-ever musical and first-ever senior recitals. All of the events will be held in the Chief Joyce Dugan Cultural Arts Center.
Junaluska among UNC Asheville students honored
UNC Asheville presented its annual student and faculty leadership awards at a special ceremony on campus on Tuesday, April 10. Brantly Junaluska, an EBCI tribal member, was awarded the Carolyn Briggs Diversity Award for her service as president of the Native American Student Association and work to engage the campus community in a variety of activities to educate and foster awareness of indigenous issues.
