The Cherokee Police Commission met on Thursday, Jan. 19 to address items at the turn of the year and any ongoings issues involving the police department.
Search underway for missing person on Blue Ridge Parkway
National Park Service Law Enforcement rangers are coordinating the efforts of a multi-agency search and investigation underway for a missing person near milepost 410 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Interior Department completes vote to remove derogatory names from several locations
The Department of the Interior announced recently the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) has voted on the remaining replacement names featuring the word sq___. In September, the Department announced the final vote for nearly 650 features, but completed an additional review for seven locations that are considered unincorporated populated places.

The Pisgah Bears topped Cherokee 39-25 in a varsity wrestling match at Cherokee on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
CROSS COUNTRY: Lambert takes third at state meet
Darius Lambert, sophomore member of the Cherokee Braves cross country team, took third place at the 1A state cross country meet at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Jessie Marie Walker Howard, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late William and Amanda Catt Walker.

Garrett LeRoy “Bone” Biddix, age 53, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021 at Haywood County Hospital following a brief illness. He is the son of the late Henderson Leroy Biddix and Nancy Wildcat Biddix.
