CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education has scheduled a series of swim classes for late spring and summer that are suitable for children ranging in age from six months to teens.
Swim classes are offered in three age divisions: “shark” level for ages 6 years and up; “fish” level for ages 3 through 5; and “minnows” level for 6 months to 3 years old. An adult must be in the pool with the child at the minnow or fish level. Classes are held in the Reid Gymnasium pool on weekdays.
A first session, recommended only for shark-level beginners, is already underway and is closed for registration.
Session two will include classes for kids in all three age divisions. Intermediate and advanced sharks will meet from 9 to 9:50 a.m. and beginner and advanced beginner sharks will meet from 10 to 10:50 a.m. or 11 to 11:50 a.m., beginning June 16 and continuing until July 1. Classes for fish and minnows will be held June 16-27, with fish having class from 6:10 to 7 p.m. and minnows meeting from 5:15 to 6:05 p.m.
Session three also will offer classes for children at all age divisions. Intermediate and advanced sharks will meet from 9 to 9:50 a.m. and beginner and advanced beginner sharks will have class from 10 to 10:50 a.m. or 11 to 11:50 a.m., beginning July 7 and continuing until July 22. Classes for fish and minnows will be held July 7-18, with fish having class from 6:10 to 7 p.m. and minnows meeting from 5:15 to 6:05 p.m.
Session four will include classes for fish and minnows beginning July 21 and continuing through Aug. 1. Fish will have classes from 6:10 to 7 p.m. and minnows will meet from 5:15 to 6:05 p.m.
Classes will be taught by Mike Creason, a retired faculty member of health, physical education and recreation at WCU. Creason has 34 years of experience teaching swim lessons to individuals of all ages and is certified by the American Red Cross.
