Fire destroys Kituwah, LLC building
The Kituwah, LLC building burned in a fire on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 15. Cherokee Fire Dept. officials noted they were dispatched to the scene at 1:55 a.m. and, joined by crews from Bryson City, Qualla, Maggie Valley, and Savanna, extinguished the fire. They note that the cause is under investigation.

Section 19 of the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Charter & Governing Document states that a tribal census must be completed every 10 years, but the last one was conducted in 2001.

The 37th annual Folkmoot International Festival, scheduled for July 18-26, has been cancelled, due to uncertainty created by the spread of COVID-19.
For Cherokee family in Alaska, isolation is nothing new
McGrath, Alaska, population 342, is home to the Welch family, three of whom are members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and are completely accustomed to the social distancing and isolation that people in the mainland are experiencing now due to COVID-19.

COMMENTARY: What we hold sacred
We just finished up the Tribal Council and School Board debates for the 2021 Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians election cycle. The candidate turnout was extraordinary with 82 percent of the Tribal Council candidates showing up for debate and 100 percent of the School Board candidates in attendance. On behalf of the One Feather, I want to thank each candidate that took the time to meet with us to share their vision for our people and our kids.
COMMENTARY: Stepping over garbage
Long walks by crystal clear creeks, jaunts up mountains, or a driveway on the parkway. It is rare to have this type of nature on your doorstep. That is why it is so disappointing when too often we kick aside burger wrappers on the way out of our doors.
COMMENTARY: Can Cherokee still be considered a tourist destination?
Cherokee is not a family friendly tourist destination any longer.

BASKETBALL: Feather back from injury, ready to go for Rabun Gap
Meona Feather is doing what she loves to do, and it’s been awhile since she’s been able to do it. The EBCI tribal member is a senior member of the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (Ga.) varsity girls basketball team, and she is just back on the hardwood following a serious knee injury.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee growing indoor track team for the future
Records were set and a new paradigm for track and field was established this year at Cherokee High School. For the first time, the school fielded an indoor track team.
BASKETBALL: Robbinsville 53 Braves 50
