Cherokee Nation withdraws from Tri-Council
One of the three legs of the tripod that is Tri-Council has decided to withdraw from participation. The Legislative Branch of the Cherokee Nation (Okla.) passed Res. No. 24-114 on Monday, Dec. 16 withdrawing their tribe from the Tri-Council which is an annual meeting of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (N.C.), the Cherokee Nation, and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (Okla.).
Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians celebrates grand opening of Caesars Virginia
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) joined Caesars Entertainment on Tuesday, Dec. 17 to celebrate the grand opening of the highly anticipated Caesars Virginia casino & resort. Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks, alongside members of his Executive team and Dinilawigi (Tribal Council), attended the event, marking a significant milestone in EBCI’s ongoing partnership with Caesars Entertainment.
A Lumbee recognition bill passes U.S. House again
For the third Congress in a row, a House bill that would grant federal recognition to the state-recognized Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has passed. By a vote of 311-96, the Lumbee Fairness Act (H.R. 1101) passed the U.S. House of Representatives, in the 118th Congress, on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024.

The Cherokee One Feather received a total of 13 awards from the N.C. Press Association at its 149th Annual Convention held in Raleigh on Thursday, Aug. 25. As a staff, the paper took second place in Division A for Community Coverage and third place for Use of Social Media.

COMMENTARY: Hey Facebook, quit deleting photos of Natives
Last evening, I uploaded a photo I took of men of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) playing stickball during the Annual Kituwah Celebration in June. That photo was almost immediately deleted by Facebook stating it went against their community standards on “nudity or sexual activity”.
COMMENTARY: Which public is the public?
We need to figure out, as a tribe, how we want to disseminate information to our community. As you know, there is an incredible amount of information that is relevant to our community discussed in the Tribal Council sessions.

BASKETBALL: Braves, Lady Braves sweep Hayesville in home opener
Following several postponements due to weather and other factors, the Cherokee Braves (1-1) and Lady Braves (2-0) finally got to play their home opener. The teams swept Hayesville at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 12. The Lady Braves won 74-59 and the Braves won an overtime thriller 52-49.
BOXING: Bahe places second at USA Boxing National Championships
Mariah Bahe, a member of the Navajo Nation with Eastern Band Cherokee heritage, took second place in the Junior Girls 95lb division at the USA Boxing Elite and Youth National Championships held Dec. 1-8 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
