CCS School Board holds meeting on May 14
The Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) School Board met on the evening of May 14 at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. The meeting was called to order at 3:33 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
Tribal Council adopts Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day
On the morning of June 6, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 212 (2024), recognizing every Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving as Tsalagi Aniwonisgi Didanvdadisdi (Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day) to honor the lives of fluent Cherokee speakers who have passed.
Bingo could be coming back to Cherokee
Cherokee Tribal Bingo closed in 2020 due to COVID-19, and it never re-opened. Now, officials of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are looking to start the operation again.

Joey Parker Memorial Playground dedicated
The exuberant spirit of the late Joseph “Joey” Parker was celebrated at an event at Cherokee Central Schools on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 24. Led by his sisters, Myra Cloer and Kym Parker, the family raised over $45,000 to construct the Joey Parker Memorial Playground behind the Cherokee Elementary School.
“Creating a Cherokee language momentum shift”: A look at the Cherokee Language Master-Apprentice Program
The Kituwah Preservation & Education Program (KPEP) held the first master-apprentice program in 2006 with funding from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.
Summer travels for EBCI students
The Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute’s Cherokee Youth Council and Youth Cultural Exchange programs had a busy summer as they traveled to St. Louis Missouri and Costa Rica.
