Capitol Christmas Tree comes to Cherokee; EBCI, U.S. Forest Service sign stewardship agreements
This year’s Capitol Christmas came to Cherokee, N.C. on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 6, and the event saw the signing of two landmarks agreements between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and the U.S. Forest Service.
Park fire near Chilhowee Lake 90 percent contained
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials reported that the wildfire near Chilhowee Lake is currently 90 percent contained. Incident Commander Erik Newell coordinated wildland firefighter response to the wildfire which is estimated to be approximately 40 acres in size and is located on the western boundary of the park along Highway 129 near mile marker 4.5.
Center for Native Health to work with EBCI DANR
The Center for Native Health 501(c)3 (CNH) has announced that it has received a subaward for $105,000.00 from the Rights and Resources Group (RRG) to conduct activities with the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) entitled, “Strengthening Tribal Nation-led Conservation and Engagement with National Parks and Forests”.

Hundreds of runners filled the streets of Cherokee for the Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon & 5K which was held on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 14.

The Cherokee High School (CHS) and Middle School (CMS) cross country teams participated in the Bulldog XC Open, hosted by Murphy High School, on Saturday, Sept. 7.

OBITUARY: Allen Edwin McCoy
Allen Edwin McCoy, 69, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at home with his family after a short battle with cancer. Allen was born on July 19, 1952 in Cherokee.

Edwin George, age 87, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Tsali Care Center after an extended illness.
OBITUARY: Lawrence “Eddie” Hill
Lawrence “Eddie” Hill, 65, of the Big Cove Community passed away at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones Monday, June 27, 2022. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Jesse and Yonnie Watty Hill.
