School Board holds Oct. 21 meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, Oct. 21 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:45 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) recognizes Regina Rosario’s role in child advocacy
Regina Ledford Rosario, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been recognized as a leader in child advocacy in Indian Country. During a session of Annual Council on the morning of Monday, Oct. 14, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) passed Res. No. 303 (2024) unanimously which recognizes Rosario as “the founder of the first Child Advocacy Center in Indian County, Heart to Heart”.
Joyce Dugan, former Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief), honored with prestigious award
Joyce Dugan, former Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, received a prestigious award on the morning of Monday, Oct. 14 that puts her on a list of distinguished recipients including Winston Churchill, President Dwight Eisenhower, President Ronald Reagan, and others.

Fishing fun: 22nd Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby hosted by Tribe
With the early morning sun sparkling off of the Oconaluftee River like a million diamonds, over 2,000 people gathered to share in family fun, create memories, and fish. The 22nd Annual Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby was hosted by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) on Saturday, Aug. 5 on the Oconaluftee River.
Cherokee Middle School will be cell phone-free
Cherokee Middle School is writing to share the exciting news that we are partnering with Yondr to make our school a cell phone-free space beginning on the first day of school Aug. 7, 2023.
Cooper named to The Order of the Long Leaf Pine
The chief executive officer of the Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority has received the highest honor from the State of North Carolina. Casey Cooper, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award during a ceremony on Saturday, July 15 during the annual Hospital Gala at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort.

Friends, isn’t it great when you know you have a faithful friend?
COMMENTARY: It isn’t as easy as it looks: The view from the backseat.
Like many of you, somewhere in my being is the urge to be a backseat driver. I say like many of you, because I know from your comments on posts that we come from the same place sometimes.
COMMENTARY: EBCI needs separate judicial branch of government
In my experience with the Tribal Court system, I have concluded that the current governmental system woefully underserves the citizens of the EBCI.

CHEERLEADING: Smoky Mountain Competition Cheer Club wins at several meets
The Smoky Mountain Competition Cheer Club has continued to excel in wins over the past few weeks. The cheerleaders represent Jackson, Macon, Swain, Haywood counties in North and Rabun County Ga. Participants range from 4-18 years of age, both boys and girls.
SOFTBALL: Middle School Lady Braves finish season undefeated, win conference title
With a dominating performance at Andrews, the Cherokee Middle School Lady Braves finished their 2021 season undefeated and won the Smoky Mountain Conference championship.
BASKETBALL: Braves, Lady Braves earn post-season honors
