Coming full circle: Sign designating Kuwohi installed in Park

The name of the third-highest summit east of the Mississippi River was restored to its original name last fall, and now it is completely official – it has a sign.  A sign designating the area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park known as Kuwohi (mulberry place) was officially unveiled in a ceremony on the morning of Tuesday, April 1.

Cherokee musicians featured in new album with N.C. artists

Blue Ridge Music Trails released an album in November of 2023 titled, “Fine Tuned: Volume One” featuring artists from western North Carolina to highlight the musical traditions of the region. Keaw’e Bone and Jarrett Wildcatt, members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), collaborated on a song on the album titled, “Three Demons.”

COMMENTARY: Those who can, do.

I have watched as some have commented on “investigative reporting” and why we don’t do more of it. They imply that either there is a lack of interest in providing that type of reporting or that somehow there is a pressure or lean toward upholding or towing the “company line” when it comes to issues involving tribal officials and their actions. Neither opinion is accurate.

Edmund (Eddie) Catolster, 59, of the Wolftown Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Menoch Catolster and Mary Bell Welch Catolster.

Larry Douglas Armachain Jr., 42, of Cherokee passed away July 28, 2024, after an extended illness.  He was born Jan. 31, 1982, to the late Larry Armachain and Pearl Wolfe.  He was a crafter who was very adept at carving, and beadwork.

Mountain Heritage Day celebrates 40th year at WCU

Thousands gather on the Western Carolina University campus in Cullowhee each year on the last Saturday in September to be a part of the region’s rich history of mountain culture at Mountain Heritage Day. This year, those attending on Saturday, Sept. 27, can be part of history by just being there, as the festival marks both its own 40th anniversary and the 125th year of the university that hosts it.
